communication and team work

what is communication and team work?

Basically, communication and team work are simply means that a group of people works together for a project. The interaction among people is called communication. This is a very important skill. In a project, we need to explain our ideas well and make sure our groupmates can fully understand; otherwise, all the effort we put in for the project will be useless and there will be no team work due to the poor communication. Hence, team work is built base on good communication. Singapore government knows the importance of this communication skill. Hence, it starts to train its people since they are in secondary school. For example, in secondary school, we have some kinds of group work. Althought this group work is very easy, it gives students an idea of what the group work looks like.

why communication and team work are so important nowadays?

Firstly, the type of work we are facing now. In the past, our projects are pretty simple. One man should be able to finish the project. However, nowadays, most of our projects are giant. They are impossible to be finished by just one or two men. For example, computer games. In the past, the computer games were created by just about 100 lines of coding, whereas now, one game is about millions and millions of coding. Hence, teamwork and good communication are very important for us to suit ourselves into this new working environment.

secondly, the advance in technology makes our communication easily. In the past, without the help of the internet, we have to arrange time and location for a group meeting. It is so troublesome that people prefer to work alone. However, nowadays people can exchange their ideas easily via msn or something else. As a result, teamwork is more preferable.

From the video above, it shows that team work is able to change impossible thing to possible.

review of CG1413?

The most important thing i learnt in the last toturial is the 7Cs. In the past, i just write whatever the words come out from my mind and never take note of the 7Cs. i will try to keep these 7Cs at back of my mind when i am writing next time.

  1. Hello Ma Siming,

You have raised several interesting points which I agree with. Firstly, I definitely feel that in a competitive economy such as Singapore, it is crucial to convey what transpires in our cerebral cortex as articulately as possible to our team members. The end result also needs to be presented effectively to influence and persuade people to our cause.

Speaking from personal experience, I observed that the individual who gets the most attention in the workplace is the one who speaks up and communicate effectively with his superior and peers. In fact, this individual gets noticed over many more qualified, hardworking and brilliant people.

Secondly, you mentioned that projects nowadays are complex and require a team to complete it. Adding to that idea, I believe that working in a team could potentially unleash a floodgate of ideas that would otherwise have been limited. To quote a cliché and over-used phrase, “Two (or any arbitrary number) heads is better than one”.

Finally, you mentioned that advances in technology have made communication more convenient for everyone. I agree with you on that point however I believe with these new platforms of communications, it is essential to be mindful of how we come across to others. For example in an msn chat, words could be easily misconstrued as tones such as sarcasm and cynicism could be wrongfully detected.

The one constant we could learn from this is irregardless of what form of communication we are using, it is imperative to be an effective communicator.

  2. Hello Siming,

After reading your post, the first thing I noticed was how you have organised your reflection! Later on, the part about the Singapore government knowing the importance of communication skills triggered my thoughts and made me reflect on how we have been learning communication skills at the various stages of our education.

The Singapore government has planned a holistic education for the students. Thus, they have implemented various forms of trainings and workshops on communication skills for students at different levels and I believe it will benefit the students in one way or another. I remember listening talks by both the external organisations and my very own teachers on communication skills when I was in Primary school. During the talks, we were taught to speak in ways in which we will convey our message clearly, “short and sweet” yet not be harsh on the other party etc. Perhaps they did not explicitly mention that it was the 7Cs, but now I realise that we might have encountered the 7Cs in one way or another in our lives.

Moreover, the very much dreaded oral examinations are not only there to test our ability in the language but also to test our communication skills. It was a norm for us to be nervous before the oral examination and I remember my teacher constantly reminding us a very useful tip to calm down- smile!
Thinking back, I feel that communication is something that we do everyday and most of us are trying to improve our own communication skills so that it becomes more effective as we develop into young adults.

    Best regards,
    Win Yee

  3. Hello Siming,

I have to congratulate you on the success of organizing your post. You have organized it in a way that is very clear, straightforward and easy for the readers to follow the flow of ideas.

As you have divided the ideas, I will leave comments based on each of the topics.

First, you have successfully conveyed the definition of communication and teamwork. Moreover, I personally like your example of Singapore government concern about the importance of teamwork. I did not study my junior years in Singapore. However, after reading your post, I can somehow understand the way you are educated, which results in the ability to work well in teams in higher education.

Second, the part illustrating the significance of communication and teamwork is informative. I quite agree with you that thanks to the advance of technology nowadays, we are at a greater advantage than we were in the past. video conferencing, chatting, blogging, etc. have made things much easier for people all over the globe to collaborate in gigantic projects.

Lastly, talking about the 7Cs, I think that if you had paid a little more intention to check the grammar and capitalization, your post would have been flawless.

Anyway, I did enjoy reading your post. Good job.

    Cheers,
    Frank
