reflection on meeting 1

Group meeting for project 1102 is very important to me. Besides learning a lot of fundamental things about C++, i found that it is really important to standardise everything in the first. For example, in our group, we did not standardise the detail about how we should write our report during our first meeting. In the end, four of us gave different versions of reports. Hence, during our second meeting, we felt that it is very hard for us to compile all of our reports into the final version. Extra time would be spent to adjust our own reports. In my opinion, this is sort of wasting time. If we are able to standardise the way to write our report in the first place, I believe that our group will be more efficient in term of doing the project.

Next, i would like to summarise some ways to improve the quality of our group meeting.

1. In the beginning, we need to state clearly what we need to do during that meeting. This is because that we can ensure our group meeting is fruitful.

2. During the discussion, we need to give every group member certain amount of time to expression their views. This is to ensure everyone in the group is on the right track and noone is left out.

3. Before the end of the meeting, we need to standardise every piece of work which we are supposed to do at home. Hence, we would not waste any time correcting any misconception during the next meeting.

In conclusion, group project is very useful for learning knowledge and group meeting is the key part of the group project. Hence, it is very important for us to take every group meeting seriously.

Resolving Interpersonal conflict

In my opinion, conflict between people is very common. There are conflicts at school, at market and on the street. Basically, conflict is just a form of expressing people's anger. Although anger between people is inevitable, we cannot turn this anger into conflict. The reason is very simply. The consequence of a conflict is unpredictable. Many criminals become murderers is because they cannot control their anger and emotion properly at the time when they commit the crime. Furthermore, 90% of murderers regret after that. Hence, how can we resolve interpersonal conflict is very important to us.

In scientific study, people with high EQ are able to control their anger much better than people with low EQ. EQ is just a skill which can be trained. Hence, in my opinion, in order to resolving interpersonal conflict, we have to improve our EQ. Below i will show you some ways to improve our EQ.

1. If you are very angry about someone who is standing right in front your and you can feel that there will be a fight between you and him soon, the best way to resolve this is that you quickly find a place where noone there. You take out a pen and a piece of paper and write down all the words that you want to "tell "him. You will find that you will become less angry about him.
2. You can try to find out the good aspects of someone who you hate the most. Then you can tell youself that he is also not taht bad.

Intercultural Communication

What is intercultural communication?

Intercultural communication means to understand how people from different cultures, countries and backgrounds interact. It determines whether people from different cultural backgrounds can live together peacefully. In this sense, well intercultural communication is very important in multi-racial countries like Singapore. For example, when people from India, Malaysia and China immigrated to Singapore, there would be lack of understanding among each other. As a result, people would feel that they did not belong to Singapore.

Government

Furthermore, in order to achieve in intercultural communication, the government plays an important role. The most important role that the government plays is treating its people fairly, regardless of races. Many examples prove that unfair policy from the government causes social conflicts like Sri Lanka. In my opinion, the government should provide its people with a lot of opportunities to practice intercultural communication.Hence, well intercultural communication is based on the fair treatment.

Economy

Last but not least, I would like to talk about the relationship between intercultural understanding and economy. Having strong economy is closely related to the racial harmony and racial harmony is based on the intercultural understanding. For example, if fights between Chinese and Malaysian always take place in Singapore, investments will certainly drop and many other chain effects like decreasing in GDP or living standard will appear. Hence, having peaceful society is the first point to ensure the stable economy of a society.

In conclusion, NUS is a global university and there are a lot of foreign students from all over the world just like the video above. Being NUS students, we have to learn intercultural communcation skill. This communication skill is essential when we graduate and start to work as Singapore is a multi-racial society.
